This is a big band instrumental original of mine, written for the 2025 DoDEA Honors Big Band. The title refers to two of my favorite musicians and friends, Paquito D’Rivera and Claudio Roditi. Both of these wonderful artists were big influences on my early jazz development, and I’ve had the pleasure of working with both numerous times. Claudio passed away in 2020, and we all miss him so. Paquito is still very active and continues to thrill audiences around the world.
This melodic Samba is a nod to some of Paquito and Claudio’s classic tunes such as “Samba for Carmen,” “Red on Red” and “The Monster and the Flower.” The chord changes are interesting but relatively approachable by intermediate improvisers. I’ve included written solos for Tenor Sax and Trumpet if needed. Lead trumpet tops out at concert C5 a couple of times, but these high notes could be easily dropped down if that’s a stretch for your lead player. I’ve included two part options for Piano & Bass – one fully notated, and one with less notation and more rhythmic and chord info only.
The preview link below sends you to a demo “Score Play” on YouTube. The current demo is mostly midi (with real Alto & Tenor Saxes), but it’ll give you the general vibe of the song.
