I wrote this arrangement for my 2018 NYV Vocal Jazz Camp group. I was specifically looking for an uptempo swinger, and also hoping to grab a public domain title that I could publish down the road. Success! Given that this song dates back to the 1920’s, early recordings are pretty dated, and barely hint at the swing possibilities of this song. However, it works great as a smooth, languid melody over the top of an uptempo swing groove.
Though listed as an SSATB chart, it is primarily SATB with a few three-part splits in the Sop/Alto staff. There is also a seven-part final chord, but this could easily be trimmed to five parts for smaller groups. The arrangement starts with an a cappella verse, and then kicks into the swing feel from there. There is a short lyric solo, and plenty of room for either vocal or instrumental improvising. The arrangement builds to a nice “shout chorus” energy after the solo space. Even though this song moves along pretty quickly, the harmonic and rhythmic complexity is not overly daunting. A solid medium to medium-advanced group should be able to dig their teeth into this one with good results.
The basic $75 purchase includes the SSATB vocal octavo, trio parts (piano, bass & drums) and a full score, which will all be contained in one large downloadable PDF. The rhythm section parts are not fully notated, but include some notation, chord changes and all necessary rhythmic notation.
