This moody English carol has always been one of my favorite Christmas melodies. I arranged this for the 2013 Indiana University “Singing Hoosiers” under the direction of Steve Zegree. Due to Steve’s sudden passing in 2015, this was the last arrangement I wrote for him. Since this song has been so well displayed in more traditional choral settings, I decided to give it a different harmonic framework. The piano is an integral part of the mood and arrangement, while the choir displays a slightly jazz-infused harmonic palate. Despite the more advanced harmonies, the voice leading is quite kind, so it is very approachable by most mature choirs.
