In 2016, the Maine Music Educators Association asked me to compose a piece for the Maine All-State Vocal Jazz Ensemble. As a Maine native, I immediately felt inclined to write something that reflected my love and nostalgia for my home state. Think of this as the Maine version of “Moonlight in Vermont.” The lyrics paint a very New England-esque picture, without ever mentioning the name of the state or any specific location. The feel and energy of this tune harkens back to songs such as “Li’l Darlin’” and “Girl Talk” – those classic swing ballads, where “laid back” is the name of the game. Even though this song is not particularly challenging in terms of rhythms and chord complexity, this will be a good workout for your ensemble when it comes to mature phrasing and expressiveness.
This arrangement includes trio parts (piano, bass & drums) and a full score, which will all be contained in one large downloadable PDF. The piano and bass parts are fully notated for novice jazz players, but include chord changes as well. There is also a fully notated “piano only” accompaniment if performing without bass and drums.
In addition to the arrangement, I have created Part Tracks ($25), “Music Minus One” Tracks ($25), and a “band only” trio track ($10) which are all available as add-on items.
Sop: B2 – G4
Alto: G2 – A3
Tenor: Eb2 – F3
Bass: Eb1 – C3 (low Eb is an optional note on last chord)
