This is a big band instrumental original of mine, inspired by the Freddie Hubbard classic “Sidewinder.” I wrote this for the DoDEA Honors Big Band and we debuted the chart in 2024. This funky even 8th blues inspired tune is a reasonably challenging song with lots of room for soloing. Lead trumpet tops out at concert A4. The sax section gets a good workout, with a few soli lines, and the brass has some nice shout chorus moments. The chord progression is a basic blues, so this song is a good improv vehicle for young improvisers. I’ve included two part options for Piano & Bass – one fully notated, and one with less notation and more rhythmic and chord info only. I’ve also included written solos for Trumpet and Tenor Sax if needed.
